Protection of Military Equipment Using a Reinforced Mesh Cage Security Enclosure
A defence logistics provider required enhanced protection for sensitive military equipment stored within a standard 20ft shipping container at a temporary operational site. The objective was to improve physical security, delay unauthorised access, and provide a rapidly deployable solution suitable for demanding field environments.
To achieve this, the container was enclosed within a heavy-duty steel mesh cage complete with an integrated roof structure. The system created a secondary security barrier around the container while maintaining visibility and ventilation.
The Challenge
Military equipment stored in temporary or remote locations remains vulnerable to theft, tampering, and opportunistic attack. Standard shipping containers provide secure storage; however, additional perimeter protection is often required in higher-risk operational areas.
The client required a solution that would:
- Increase resistance to forced entry
- Deter opportunistic intrusion attempts
- Support CCTV and patrol visibility
- Allow airflow around the container
- Be rapidly deployable and modular
The Solution
A heavy-duty welded mesh cage was installed around the 20ft container, including full roof coverage to prevent climbing and overhead access attempts.
Security Specification
- 50 x 50mm welded mesh grid
- 5mm diameter steel wire construction
- Integrated roof protection
- Heavy-duty steel support framework
- Modular installation suitable for temporary deployment
The mesh configuration provided strong physical resistance against cutting tools and manual attack methods while preserving clear visibility for perimeter monitoring and surveillance systems.
Assessment & Performance
The enclosure system was assessed against common intrusion techniques including:
- Manual forced entry attempts
- Portable cutting tool attacks
- Climbing and roof penetration attempts
- Tampering and opportunistic access
Testing demonstrated that the reinforced mesh enclosure significantly increased attack delay time compared with an unprotected container installation. The open mesh design also reduced heat retention and moisture build-up by maintaining airflow around the container.
Results
The completed installation delivered a robust and practical security enhancement for deployed military storage operations.
Key Outcomes
- Improved protection of sensitive equipment
- Increased delay against forced entry attempts
- Enhanced visibility for guards and CCTV monitoring
- Reduced vulnerability at temporary operational sites
- Rapid deployment and relocation capability
Conclusion
The reinforced mesh cage system successfully provided an additional layer of physical security for military equipment stored within a 20ft container. Combining a 50 x 50mm welded mesh pattern with 5mm steel wire construction and integrated roof protection, the solution delivered increased operational security while remaining practical for temporary and remote deployments.
The project demonstrated the effectiveness of modular steel mesh enclosures for military logistics hubs, forward operating bases, and temporary secure storage compounds where enhanced asset protection is essential.
